Influence of sex on activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) and prothrombin time (PT) in sheep.

چکیده
Haemostasis is a physiological process that prevents excessive blood loss. In laboratory, the prothrombin time (PT) and the activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) are used to examine clotting systems. However, the influence of sex on PT and aPTT values is unknown. The present work aimed to determine the values for PT and aPTT in adult sheep and to evaluate their dependence on the sex of the animal. Blood samples were collected from 40 adults (1-6 years old) of mixed breed sheep (20 males and 20 females) via jugular venepuncture conducted using vacuum tubes containing 3.8% sodium citrate as an anticoagulant. PT and aPTT were determined by visual detection of clot formation. The mean PT and aPTT values for all sheep were 7.71 ± 0.87 s and 35.7 ± 3.57 s, respectively. The aPTT values showed a significant difference (P = 0.0013) between male and female samples, while the difference in PT values was not significant (P = 0.0565). Thus, the animal sex influences the function of the plasma blood-clotting system in sheep. In contrast with table 1 data, in particular, aPTT values are significantly higher in female sheep than in males.

Effect of Haemodialysis on Mean Prothrombin Time and Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time in Patients of End Stage Renal Disease
Background: To determine mean prothrombin time and activated partial thromboplastin time in patients of end stage renal disease having normal baseline coagulation parameters after hemodialysis. Methods: In this cross sectional study 84 patients ,16-70 years of age, with end stage renal disease were selected. Prothrombin Time (PT) and Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT) were performed p...
متن کاملHow to interpret and pursue an abnormal prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, and bleeding time in adults.
The prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) are among the most commonly ordered coagulation tests. In 2005, more than 140,000 PT and more than 95,000 APTT tests were performed at Mayo Clinic. The most common indications for ordering these tests include anticoagulant monitoring, initial evaluation of hemorrhage, and, although not generally indicated, routine preope...
متن کاملInfluence of temperature and storage duration on measurement of activated partial thromboplastin time, D-dimers, fibrinogen, prothrombin time and thrombin time, in citrate-anticoagulated whole blood specimens.
INTRODUCTION We report the effect of temperature and storage duration on a range of haematological analytes: activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), D-dimers, fibrinogen (Fbg), prothrombin time (PT) and thrombin time (TT). All analytes were measured using a Sysmex CA7000 System with SIEMENS reagents. METHODS One hundred and sixty patients were divided into two groups: samples from group...
متن کاملInfluence of coagulation and anticoagulant factors on global coagulation assays in healthy adults.
It remains unclear how coagulation and anticoagulant factors influence global coagulation assays such as prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), and thrombin generation assay (TGA). We measured PT, aPTT, coagulation factor and protein levels, and TGA parameters (lag time, endogenous thrombin potential [ETP], and peak thrombin) in 252 apparently healthy adults. Vitam...
متن کاملDIC Score: Statistical Relationship with PT, APTT, and Simplified Scoring Systems with Combinations of PT and APTT
We looked into the statistical association of prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) score calculated using the International society for thrombosis and haemostasis (ISTH) scoring system. The PT, APTT, PT + APTT, and PT/APTT ratios were evaluated against the DIC score by linear regression analysis in fifty inpatie...
